Chicago Registration Closes Friday!

Join your colleagues in the Children, Youth and Family Section on Tuesday, August 21, from 8AM to 5PM and on Wednesday, August 22, from 8AM until Noon for our annual CYF Summer Workshop. Carol McKinley Promoted

United Methodist Homes of New Jersey announced the promotion of Dr. Carol McKinley to Vice President of Operations, effective July 16. In this role Carol will assume strategic oversight and management of all five full-service communities in the UMH-NJ family. She will also be responsible for the development and direction of system operational initiatives.

Carol has extensive experience in the operations and management of the complete continuum of care. President & CEO Larry Carlson praised her demonstrated leadership ability as executive director at the Shores at Wesley Manor. She holds a Bachelor’s and Master’s in Social Work, as well as a PhD in Administration and Leadership Studies.

Carol has served as a valuable Eagle Commission member and was instrumental in the creation of the New Eagle program recently introduced.

Penn State Fines to Help Children

Something good may come out of the tragedy at Penn State University’s athletic program. The NonProfit Times reports that the $60 million penalty will be earmarked for programs to prevent child sex abuse and to minister to victims of abuse. It is not yet known if the funds will be restricted to Pennsylvania. Read more from the NPT article here


Healthcare Reform’s Impact

It’s no secret that the Supreme Court has upheld most Healthcare Reform provisions. To learn what’s happening in your state in response to this landmark decision, click here and here.


Control Employee Healthcare Costs

While the full impact of the Supreme Court’s decision is yet to be determined, UMA is exploring the feasibility of a new Association health insurance program.

We are exploring a program that could potentially provide the following benefits:

Reduce the cost of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) upheld by the Supreme Court

Create a shared PPACA compliance knowledge base

Create plan design flexibility by removing control of your employee health plan from the insurance carrier 

Placing decisions and control in the hands of our members

By combining employees into a larger, shared risk pool spread across several UMA member agencies, we can minimize rate fluctuations from year to year

One option is a self-insured plan that would include stop-loss coverage in the event of catastrophic claims

Members in the News

The United Methodist Homes of New Jersey has two openings. They’re searching for a new Executive Director at their Bristol Glen community. Read more here. They also have an opening for a new Executive Director at The Shores at Wesley Manor in Ocean City following the promotion of Carol McKinley. Read more about the position here.

Hillcrest Family Services, Dubuque, IA, has been approved by the Dubuque County Board of Supervisors as the purchaser of the Julien Care Facility in Dubuque and the operation of the adult residential program. The transition will occur in late October. Hillcrest President & CEO Gary Gansemer says, “This will expand our 37 year old adult residential treatment program and allow the move and expansion of our New Hope adolescent treatment program to that facility. At the same time our emergency youth shelter will move to the Asbury Road campus.” Gansemer cites their history of excellent service and positive track record of public/private partnerships as the reason they were selected.

Methodist LeBonheur Healthcare, Memphis, has selected Chaplain Jesse W. Moore as the 2012 individual Inspiration in Faith and Health recipient. Jesse will be recognized and honored at the 2012 Living Awards Benefit on Thursday, August 16, 2012 at the Grand Ballroom of the Peabody Hotel here in Memphis. John Wilcher, Director of Clergy and Conference Ministries at the hospital says, “He has and is truly an Inspiration in Faith and Health not only for us here at Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare but through his many years of service in the U. Methodist Retirement Communities, The Woodlands, TX, is celebrating 50 years of ministry to seniors in Texas. Ron Jennette is President & CEO. Methodist Retirement Communities, The Woodlands, TX, has announced the purchase of land in the League City/Clear Lake area of Galveston County, south of Houston for the creation of the MRC Clear Springs Healthy Living Community. Construction is expected to start at the end of 2013 or early 2014. Preliminary plans show 108 independent/Residential apartment homes, 36 Assisted Living apartments, 24 Memory Support suites, 20 short-term Rehab units, and 28 Skilled Nursing units for long-term care.

Methodist Children’s Home, Waco, TX, has some exciting news to share about program growth in the midst of difficult economic times. Tim Brown, President/CEO recently told UMA staff that part of their growth is due to a research partnership with Texas Christian University in implementing a Trauma-Informed Practice Model of Care. Paul Yeun, Chaplain and Director of Pastoral Services at Chambersburg Hospital, part of Summit Health, in Chambersburg, PA was a member of a medical mission team to Ecuador. Read all about ithere. Previous missions served the Czech Republic, Ghana, Bolivia, Peru (twice) and Ecuador. The group returns to Ecuador on Bebruary 3, 2013. This year’s missionaries treated more than 1,700 patients and filled more than 2,200 prescriptions.
